How to Use Picture-in-Picture Mode on your Android Phone

Picture-in-picture mode is a handy feature on Android devices that allows you to watch videos, make video calls, and use other apps while simultaneously using a different app. This feature was introduced with the launch of Android 18 back in 2017. This is a straightforward feature and works seamlessly but you need to know how to turn it on and which apps allow this.

Picture-in-picture mode doesn’t work with all video apps. It’s up to app developers whether they add the necessary support to this feature or not. If it isn’t included in the app, switching from an app while playing the videos will immediately stop the video and close the app. If it is included, here’s how you can enable picture-in-picture mode on your Android phone.

Enabling picture-in-picture mode

Whether your app supports or not, you can still enable or disable this feature on the app.

1. Go to the Settings app of your Android Phone.

2. Find Apps or Apps & notifications.

3. Tap Special app access.

(On phones having older versions of Android, tap Advanced and then hit Special app access.)

4. Now tap Picture-in-picture.

5. Choose the apps from the given list. Turn the toggle on if you want to use picture-in-picture mode for your selected apps.

When a video is playing in a window, press Home to activate picture-in-picture mode. You will see a window playing your video while you are on another app. You can control the video by tapping on the video. The options are Play/pause and Fullscreen etc. You can relocate the video screen by dragging it. Pinch it to resize. To close, the picture-in-picture window, click on X or drag the screen to the bottom into the X bubble.
