Meta recently introduced live location sharing on Instagram. In a blog post on Monday, they explained how this new feature works. This tool is already available for many apps like Google Maps, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and other messaging apps but finally, Instagram is not left behind in location sharing. This makes hangouts easier. You get more time to spend with each other and less on making coordinations. Whether you want to catch up with friends or head towards home, sharing your location through DMs can be a wonderful feature to send your whereabouts. Let’s walk through how it works.
How to share live location on Instagram:
Sharing live location on Instagram is so easy. Here’s an easy-to-follow guide to share live location.
1. Launch the Instagram app on your phone.
2. Go to your Messages.
Tap the ‘messenger’ icon at the top right corner of the screen.
3. Open the Chat.
You can share live location both in 1:1 messages or group chats. Select a chat and open it.
4. Tap the ‘+’ button in the right corner below the screen.
5. Tap “Location”.
6. Tap “Share your location”.
Your live location or pinned spot on the map will be shared with the concerned person. If you receive the location, you can’t forward it to other chats or groups. This feature is off by default and works only for up to one hour when you share the location. It will expire after one hour. You can also pin a spot on the map to coordinate arrival times.
Instagram instructs that you should only share your location with those you know in real life. Never share it with the unknown. You will also see a prominent indicator at the top of the chat so you are reminded that you’re sharing your live location. Stop it anytime you want to. Let’s learn how.
How to Stop Sharing Live Location on Instagram
As mentioned above, you can share your location only for one hour. If you want to share for less time (suppose 20 minutes), Instagram allows you to stop sharing live location. For that:
1. Head back to the chat where you shared your live location.
2. Tap ‘View’.
3. Now tap ‘Stop Sharing the location’.
Why Live Location Feature is not showing on your phone?
Instagram announced this feature on Monday (Nov 25). So if you are unable to find this feature on your account, update the app immediately. If it is still not showing, it reflects that this feature is not available in your country. Instagram mentioned in their post that this feature is available only in selected countries. The list of those countries is yet not available.
It is important to mention that you can’t sign in Instagram account if you’re under 13. According to Meta, location sharing is off for minors by default. Teens under 16 will require a parent’s permission to change any of the strict automatic protections.
